One River North
A crack of natural terrain carves through the 16-story glass facade of One River North, (ORN), a new mixed-use development near the center of Denver, Colorado’s River North Art District (RiNo). More than just an apartment building, One River North is a vertical landscape for its residents to wander as if hiking in the mountains. “Imagine living in a building yet feeling as though you’re immersed in a natural landscape—like living within a canyon itself,” says MAD Principal Architect, Ma Yansong.
This terrain-inspired fissure rises from the ground up, pulling the spirit of nature into the heart of the city. It brings the pulse of the earth into the modern urban fabric, softening the coldness of contemporary architecture with a sense of wildness and vitality. Moving through the spaces along this crack feels like walking along a mountain path — as you ascend, light, greenery, and urban views shift and flow together, so that every floor feels connected to nature. This design closes the distance between people and their environment, breaking the rigid image of a typical high-rise and bringing an unexpected sense of intimacy.
Here, architecture is no longer just shelter — it becomes a vertical community that interacts with its surroundings. The building acts as an extension of the natural world, positioning residents’ daily lives at the threshold between city and nature. Morning light streaming through the glass façade and the evening breeze drifting along the fissure offer moments of calm and freedom, allowing people to find inner peace amid concrete and steel. This is more than an apartment building; it is an experiment in the symbiosis of city and nature.
The inspiration behind this design comes from the depth and flow of canyon landscapes. Through this fissure-like vertical garden, people can feel embraced by nature even in the city. This immersive experience makes residents feel as if they’re strolling along a mountain trail, standing in stark contrast to the towering urban skyline. Light, wind, and greenery filter into every corner, helping people escape the city’s noise and rediscover the quiet comfort of the natural world — a rare luxury in an urban environment.
