This is an interior design project for a large-scale liquor store in eastern Taiwan. Due to the owner’s amazing collection of liquor and his in-depth research on various types of liquor, the “Spirits Museum” was designed as the main axis of the overall space planning in the hope that the characteristics of the liquor itself and the delicate and abstract physical process of tasting liquor would be presented concretely in this space.
Immediately upon entering the space, one can feel the linear paths of the floor and ceiling light sources leading to the natural curve of the throat-like entrance, followed by the canyon surrounded by red and white wine on both sides, just like the smooth flow of wine into the throat through the tongue, and then through the deliberately squeezed narrow opening to the wider display area.
In the course of this circuit, you can also peek into the core area of the space through the narrow slit beside the path, just like in the process of wine tasting, the wine continuously emits various kinds of aromas, sometimes wispy, sometimes strong. By peeking through the leading path, we finally arrive at the space surrounded by whiskey made over decades, just like the fragrant molecules emitted from the high concentration of spirits filling the entire nasal cavity, enjoying the pleasure of the stimulation of olfactory receptors.
The bartending and liqueur areas have a visual party that allows each spirit to express itself as much as possible. Various natural spices used in gin making are in the center of the pocket space, which can be mixed similarly to fragrances. The spice recipes can be changed according to different seasons, serving as an aromatic experience that guides the olfactory senses in the space.
Most of the walls and ceilings in the space are irregularly curved. The materials on the walls have been purified to bring the focus of the design back to the exploration of the form itself as much as possible, not only to illustrate the relationship between liquids and human bodies but also to analogize the different elegant curves of various wine bottles.
In addition to the design concept derived from the shots, the designer hopes to integrate Hualien’s local characteristics further. And other than the local spirits produced in cooperation with local distilleries, the design also uses the local specialty serpentine stone as the visual focal point of the space.
Finally, when the night falls, the dark residential area reveals the color of golden wine, where a network of wines from all over the world are gathered, waiting for tasters to come and explore.
