Repeatedly threatened with closure, the self-nominated “Art and Culture Free State” of Odonien is one of the most unusual and fascinating places in Cologne. The journey there is an adventure in itself. From the “Nippes” S-Bahn overground train station, the route goes through an industrial no-man’s land before passing Europe’s largest brothel. Suddenly, a wonderland of sculptures made from rusty metal parts, incredible works of art made of scrap metal, room installations and hidden corners opens up. Odonien, conceived and successfully brought into being by the sculptor Odo Rumpf, leaves visitors gaping in astonishment. It is a mixture of adventure playground, studio and subcultural event location. The spaces alternate between tents and industrial ruins. There are almost no doors, and the openness to experimentation is reflected in every corner of the site. Unusual parties are held here, as are wild concerts and festivals. In the summer in particular, the open-air site has a unique atmosphere and feel about it – especially when the evening sun sets behind the iconic sculpture of a rusty steel dinosaur and the place vibrates with the sound of the bass.

With Odonien, the artist Odo Rumpf has created a unique combination of open-air studio, workshop, event location and cultural center. In the middle of Ehrenfeld, between the railway line and Europe’s largest Eroscenter, the area captivates with its idiosyncratic charm. Event halls, the artist’s workshop, a huge store of found objects, an open-air stage and a richly planted beer garden with bizarre metal sculptures offer an atmosphere of industrial culture and improvisational art that is unique in Cologne.

The idea of a free state
Originally a place where artists could live and develop freely, Odo Rumpf was keen to design a place for creative work without social boundaries and dependencies: a free state. Today the Free State of Odonien is a place of cultural exchange. Culture workers, artists and socially committed people have the opportunity to work out their ideas and to exchange ideas with other creative thinkers. In this way, interesting, cross-cultural and social projects are regularly created that are included in Odonien’s event program. Odonien is accessible to everyone. In addition to artistic and social projects, the Free State is also established in the party and concert sector. The wide range of events of all kinds makes Odonien a special venue. Whether art or culture, festival or flea market, rock or rave: In Odonien, commerce, art and social projects complement each other to form a balanced whole. The summer open-air cinema or festivals such as Robodonien (robot art) take place on the spacious outdoor area and are now a tradition in the Free State.
